We offer placements to a variety of different professionals including social workers, occupational therapists, police officers and medical students. Our placements provide students with firsthand experience of working with people with mental illnesses and an opportunity to put theory into practice. Our staff team are friendly and welcoming and are always willing to help. Students will gain insight into the day to day lives of our service users and a better understanding of the issues they face on a day to day basis.
As well as placements, we also offer workshops for groups of students or professionals that cover a range of topics from risk assessment to care-planning, all with a focus on residential care and common mental illnesses. Participants gain the benefit of our experience by discussing real world examples that helps to link theory to practice.
Social Work Student – Manchester University
From being a first year BA Social Work student I have gained so much experience from Castlerea. I got on very well with all 10 of the residents so well, as it was such a welcoming atmosphere. All of the residents were lovely in taking an interest what subject I study and why I want to be a social worker.
Both Linda and James, the management at Castlerea were both really welcoming, and it is clear to see what a great deal of effort they both make with all of the residents. Castlerea feels really homely and more like a family atmosphere than a care home. All of the staff team I worked besides displayed anti-discriminatory values as well as showing respect and maintaining dignity to all of the residents whilst meeting all of their needs.
All of the residents at Castlrea were very happy and very comfortable, and when asked they said they would not change a thing. I have really enjoyed my first experience working in the mental health sector. It has been eye opening experience and I have seen a different more positive side to mental health than the stigmas I’ve heard about. Thank you so much for having me!
Social Work Student – Liverpool John Moores University
As a social work student in my second year, I completed my first placement of 70 days at 18 Hope Street, Salford. Throughout my time at 18 Hope Street I carried out a lot of different tasks including one on one work, acting as an advocate and socialising with the residents.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time on placement and learned a lot useful skills for my future career as a social worker. The staff and all of the residents were very supportive and friendly and made me feel welcome immediately.
I was impressed with what 18 Hope Street offers to its residents and how personal the care and support they were receiving was in comparison to other residential homes I have visited.
