A big success all round!!
We only found out about National Care Home Open Day a few weeks before the event but we knew that it was something we wanted to be a part of. Despite, the short notice we had an excellent day and thanks are due to the residents and staff who welcomed our guests and made them very welcome.
We decided we wanted to have a day when we could celebrate what we do at Castlerea, and to take the chance to demonstrate this to others. We particularly wanted to encourage students to come on placement with us, because it has been very positive having people learning new skills at Castlerea.
The programme for the day included some of the activities we enjoy, and a chance to introduce other people who work with us. We were joined by Catherine, Art Therapist and Hannah local writer and publisher.
We had sessions of Bingo, learning about bread making and seeking out new recipes to try, and art session with Catherine, and Hannah read a short story to a group. Lunch was a buffet where everyone could talk to our guests, and we ended the day in a traditional Friday manner with Fish and Chips.
Our guests came from colleges and universities, the local old people’s mental health team, CQC, and the local Dementia Champions Team. It was really good to make contacts with other people working in our area and find out ways in which we could work together in the future. They all seemed to enjoy their visit and toured the garden and joined in the activity sessions. All guests went away with written information about us, and how to get in touch in the future and we hope to see them again.
